On 9 April, we held our first AQuA Community meet-up at King’s Manor in York. It was a great opportunity for our citizen scientists to come together, many meeting in person for the first time.
During the day, participants:
connected over lunch and discussed key aquatic health topics
heard project updates from John Wilkinson (Project Lead) and took part in a knowledge exchange
took part in a co-creation session led by Sarah Moore (Public Engagement Coordinator) to shape the AQuA Community and agree guiding principles for future meet-ups
It was a pleasure to catch up with the citizen scientists involved in the AQuA project and contributing to our mission and work on Yorkshire’s rivers and lakes.
Our next meet-up is planned for August 2026, in collaboration with the Ilkley Clean River Group.

As a part of the Citizens4Water official launch, AQuA has been invited to share our learnings and approach to citizen science on this global platform. You can find more information about the UNESCO Citizens4water here.

We held a kick-off meeting in York to launch the AQuA project. It was an opportunity to:
Hear about the first phase of the project and some of our initial results from our pilot study on chemicals and E. coli in 2024,
Hear from our project partners including Yorkshire Water and the Environment Agency on how citizen science can help solve Yorkshire's aquatic pollution problems,
Talks from Yorkshire academics about regional water pollution,
Hear from public groups already doing citizen science across the region,
Have a look at some of the toolkits we've already co-developed for chemicals and bacteria in water, and
Invite participants to help shape and get involved with the next phase of the project in 2025
